January 5, 2024 — Wyoming Public Radio warned on Wednesday that utilities should “pay a little more attention to warnings about the vulnerability of all U.S. utilities to international cyberattacks.”
Security concerns were raised in the summer of 2021, prompting various agencies to list resources available to utilities. The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has an online directory of resources and tool kits and the Environmental Protection Agency offers a list of products and services available to support water sector resilience.
Wyoming Public Radio‘s admonition followed a late November incident in western Pennsylvania where Iranian-based hackers claimed they targeted part of the Aliquippa water system because it uses software developed by an Israeli company:
