The June 15 map produced by the U.S. Drought Monitor shows that significant portions of the Western states are suffering extreme or exceptional drought.
According to the National Weather Service, “extreme drought” indicates major crop/pasture losses, extreme fire danger, and widespread water shortages or restrictions. “Exceptional drought” brings widespread crop and pasture losses, exceptional fire risk, shortages of water in reservoirs, streams and wells causing water emergencies.
